The highest amount of keys I've ever gotten a day is 2. But ive been playing daily since the box gear/key award rebalance;haven't had boxes for a week, opened 5 from a "hack 13 primaries" mission reward.

I never got behind, because i did research on the lockbox 1.0 loot table. Not a luxury everyone can afford i know.
BUT!
The good thing about boxes is the contents are spawned upon opening them, not acquiring them.
So those 1000 you have, all have ADV gear or better (prolly officer, it's approaching 50%) instead of STD gear or pre-made fits.
Yay stuff!
